New Fines

P.A. council approves new fine system to stop aggressive solicitors

Feb 17, 2022 | 8:00 AM

Unruly solicitors in Prince Albert can now face a big fine every time they disrupt a business.

P.A.’s city council met on Tuesday where they approved updating the Obstructive Solicitation Bylaw.

The big change is allowing police the opportunity to fine people up to $2,000 per incident. The previous wording allowed police to provide one overall fine of $2,000.

Councillor Blake Edwards, who brought the motion forward to update the bylaw, said his reasoning was to try and stop people who constantly cause trouble for certain businesses. He added it’s not intended to stop homeless people from asking for help.

Edwards noted he’s also heard from many people, some of which who live outside of the community, they don’t want to shop in P.A. because of these unruly people.

Not everyone on P.A.’s council was on board with the change as Councillors Charlene Miller, Tony Head, and Terra Lennox-Zepp all voted against the change.

Head explained he believed the motion would only hurt people who don’t have the money to pay for the fine.
