Tegan Hryniuk looked like he was suspended in air as he performed a kickflip over the rail Monday night at the Kinsmen Skateboard and BMX park.

The crowd cheered when Aaron Sayese landed a nose manual 360 shove-it flawlessly and later a laser flip with just as much ease.

Skateboarders gathered to celebrate International Go Skateboarding Day on Monday evening. Adam Balon of Propaganda skateboard and snowboard shop has hosted the event for the last 16 years, with the exception of last year due to the pandemic.

“The skateboard culture in Prince Albert is really good. This is just a place where kids can come and hang out, meet new friends, skate around and learn a bunch of tricks and have a good time,” Balon said.

The concrete park is 20,000 square feet and equipped for skateboarders, scooters and BMX. Balon said while the park is starting to age somewhat after 15 years of use, its still well designed for a variety of skill levels and age groups.

“The best thing about it is absolutely anyone can use the park from their very first push right up to a pro skateboarder,” said Balon. “I’ve seen generations of skateboarders come through…groups of kids who grow up and then bring their own kids here.”

The park may see more use in the future as its popularity continues to grow as an alternative to mainstream sport. Skateboarding will make its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics with men and women each competing in park and street events.

While his event wasn’t an official competition, Balon did hand out prizes to some of the participants who showed off their best foot and rail tricks utilizing the whole park.

“It was more of just a jam format to bring the skateboarding community together.”
