Fundraiser for the Women’s Shelter to be held virtually

A bi-annual fundraiser for the Women’s Safe Shelter in Prince Albert is being held virtually this year due to COVID-19. ‘Women of Wonder’ is being held on Oct. 21 on the WOW Facebook page.

The Facebook group is private so participants will have to follow the account and donate to the fundraiser to gain access to the event.

People who are wanting to donate to the shelter and can provide more than just funds and are encouraged to do so.

Volunteer organizer of the event, Lorna Boryski says they accept physical goods for women as well.

“When you come to a shelter, you probably have your purse and the clothes on your back,” Boryski said. “What our fundraising does is provides pajamas, socks, and underwear. Things you cannot normally grab when you are fleeing a situation.

“Personal objects like soap, shampoo. Each woman (or) family needs to have their own, they can’t share, and with COVID, that is even more apparent.”

The current pandemic has made fundraising near impossible for the shelter, until now.

“All of the fundraising the shelter does, bingos, those types of things have been cancelled. There is zero funding for extra things this year,” Boryski said.

Due to other fundraisers being cancelled, there is some added weight being put on the Women of Wonder event.

“The reason we started WOW was so people could understand what the shelter is about. It was never about raising money, it was more about awareness,” Boryski said. “Through what the people at the shelter have said, we know that awareness has risen due to us doing the WOW event.”

There will be five different artists putting on a show during the live event including a performance from Heidi Munro and Scott Patrick, The Strong Sisters, and Stephanie Rose, Boryski told paNOW.

Sherry Bates, assistant director of the shelter, says the awareness the event raises is not only for women who are seeking immediate help.

“Sometimes people don’t realize they need us, and if the word is out there and it’s something that people talk about, then they feel more free and confident to reach out if they need our help,” Bates explained.
