Sherry Bates, Executive Director, Commissioner for Oaths at the Iskwew Awasis Waskaykan Women’s Shelter south of Prince Albert confirmed domestic violence continues to be a significant concern in Prince Albert and surrounding communities, creating an ongoing need for safe, accessible, and culturally responsive services for women and children experiencing violence. 

 “Since opening, the PBCN IAW shelter has provided safe accommodation and 24/7 crisis and support services to women and children in need. Strong utilization of the new facility demonstrates the ongoing demand for emergency shelter and wrap-around supports in the community,” she said, adding the shelter also provides opportunities to connect clients with mental health services, housing supports, cultural resources, food and nutrition services, and other community-based programs. 

“The availability of additional shelter capacity helps reduce barriers for women seeking safety, while providing a supportive environment where clients can begin planning for longer-term stability and independence. Continued collection of occupancy and service data will help demonstrate community need, measure program impact, and support future funding and service planning.”
