Extracurricular activities on hold

Sask Rivers postpones extracurricular activities

On Tuesday, the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) advised teachers and school staff to avoid volunteering for extracurricular activities while schools are set to reopen.

But the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division staff members don’t have a problem with that, because they have already postponed all extracurricular activities.

As per their Return to School Plan that was revised on Tuesday, “all in-person extra-curricular activities are on hold until further notice.”

“Currently, all our extracurricular activities are postponed until further notice. We’re doing this to ensure a safe return to school, for both our staff and students,” superintendent Cory Trann told paNOW during a phone interview on Wednesday. “When extracurricular activities resume, it will be done after we determine it to be safe and be prudent to do so. We’ll consult with the health authority prior to opening up extracurriculars.”

All activities that go on after the school day has ended will be shelved for the time being. That includes all sports that would be starting up in the fall like volleyball, football, soccer, golf, and cross country. Drama, music, and other programs have also been put on hold.

Trann said Sask. Rivers will focus first on starting the school year and getting everybody settled into a safe start in the year, before adding extracurriculars down the road.

“Until then, we’ll get kids back, get them learning, and feeling safe and transitioning them safely. Then, we’ll determine with the help of the health authority when to remove those restrictions,” Trann said. “We’re going to do that prudently and systematically.”

“We’re trying to return as soon as we can with safety in mind for both staff and students — that’s paramount. We’re going to get students back in here, and we don’t know how that’s going to look with our extracurricular, but we’re going to make sure that we do it in a safe way.

There are 33 schools in the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division, covering Prince Albert as well as rural areas like Big River, St. Louis, Kinistino, Meath Park, and Christopher Lake to name a few. The school year is slated to start between Sept. 8 to 11.
