Two year deal

Métis organization wins contract to operate Midtown Community Club

For the first time, the City of Prince Albert has awarded a community club operating contract to Métis Central Western Region II.

The two-year agreement makes the Métis organization responsible for operating the Midtown Community Club and providing social, cultural, recreational and educational programming for city residents.

Jody Boulet, the city’s director of operations, said administration recommended a shorter initial term because the organization is a new municipal contractor.

“Before we pursue additional years, we want to make sure those checks and balances all remain in place,” Boulet told council.

Boulet said he is confident the arrangement will work, but the two-year term and annual reporting requirements will allow the city to ensure the operating conditions are being met.

Under the agreement, the organization must operate the building according to city guidelines and keep it clean, tidy and in good repair.

The city will provide operations and maintenance funding and pay the facility’s utility costs.

Coun. Darren Solomon said both groups that submitted proposals had strong visions, but supported the city’s choice and the shorter term.

“We do have a fairly new situation,” Solomon said. “I think it’s good for everybody to learn how that’s going to work and how we can work well together.”
