Chamber sponsors free downtown parking stalls to encourage shopping

The Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce is hoping six free parking stalls will encourage more people to shop in the city’s downtown.

The Chamber announced Monday it has sponsored six parking stalls in the city-owned lot just off the corner of 12th Street and Central Avenue. The designated stalls offer up to two hours of free parking and are marked with Chamber signage and yellow covers over the parking meters.

The initiative is intended to make it easier for residents and visitors to access downtown businesses.

“As a Chamber, we are committed to supporting the success and visibility of our downtown business community,” said Patty Hughes, CEO of the Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce. “Sponsoring these parking stalls is a practical way to encourage residents to visit, shop, and enjoy the incredible local businesses that contribute to our city’s high quality of life.”

Hughes said the idea came about through discussions with Prince Albert & District Community Futures, which has also sponsored six free parking stalls on the west side of Central Avenue.

The Chamber paid for its six stalls, while the City of Prince Albert collaborated on the initiative by making the city-owned parking spaces available.

“I would like to also thank the City of Prince Albert because by having these conversations of what we wanted to do, they were very much wanting to collaborate on it as well,” Hughes said.

She said several businesses have already expressed interest in seeing the program expand, so there may be more conversations in the future with the City about the concept.

“This is about, come on downtown. Don’t use that as a deterrent that you don’t have money,” she said.

“I know the City of Prince Albert has made some investments getting a parking app and things like that, but this is wanting to make sure that everybody has accessibility to downtown because we have some amazing businesses here in our business core and this is just a great opportunity.”

Hughes said ultimately the free parking stalls are one more way to help drive local traffic, and strengthen the downtown while supporting local business.
