Legionnaires edge Mintos in Game 5, eliminating them from SMAAAHL playoffs

Mar 10, 2024 | 7:32 PM

The Prince Albert Mintos saw their season come to an end on Sunday night.

The Mintos were back in Swift Current to close out their first-round series with the Legionnaires and came out on the losing end, falling 2-1 in a do-or-die Game 5 at the InnovationPlex.

The loss signifies the end of the campaign for P.A. while the Legionnaires move on to the semifinals where they will face the Regina Pat Canadians.

The series loss is the fifth straight first-round exit for the Mintos dating back to the 2019 postseason.

Prince Albert had Swift Current on the brink of elimination for the better half of the best-of-five series following their Game 1 and Game 2 victories to quickly go up 2-0. While in the hole, the Legionnaires managed to rally with key wins in Games 3 and 4 where they carried that same attitude into Game 5 to complete the series comeback.

After a scoreless opening period in Game 5, the Legionnaires struck first on home ice early in the second with Jackson Fox’s second playoff goal in as many games. Swift Current would strike again later that same frame, this time coming off the tape of Kayd Ruedig to double the lead.

In the third, Prince Albert managed to catch a break as Will Whitter was awarded a penalty shot where he made no mistake for his first career playoff tally, making it a one goal game.

Unfortunately for the Green and Gold, that’s as close as they would come. The Mintos pulled the goalie in the final moments but couldn’t convert with the extra attacker as the Legionnaires hung on for the 2-1 win.

Swift Current netminder Berney Weston earned Home Star honours with 33 stops while Mintos’ Brady Holtvogt was awarded the Away Star for his 34 save performance.

U18 AA Playoffs

The Prince Albert Lake Country Timberwolves were successful in their first round of playoffs.

They defeated the West Central WheatKings 4-3 on Saturday night at the Kinsmen Arena to take the best-of-three series, 2-1.

Their next opponents are yet to be determined.

U15 Playoffs

The Prince Albert Venice House Pirates put in a valiant effort in the final game of their best-of-three playoff series.

They hosted the Saskatoon Stallions at the Kinsmen Arena Sunday night and entered the third period down 6-1, but managed to score six goals in quick succession to tie the game 7-7 and force a sudden-death overtime. Unfortunately, their season would end when the Stallions scored just a few minutes into OT.
