Police nab dog thief with help from pup’s GPS collar: court

Oct 4, 2023 | 1:00 PM

A truck and dog stolen from Regina, and later found in Prince Albert, were tracked thanks to the dog’s GPS collar.

That was among the facts heard on Wednesday at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

The man responsible for the theft, Kyle Hodder, received a three-month sentence after entering guilty pleas to possession of stolen property over $5,000, and dangerous driving.

The offence happened in early August, and Crown Prosecutor Gail Douglas said Hodder was able to gain access to the truck as it had been left parked with the keys in it. The driver was nearby talking to one of their family members.

The Husky had been sitting in the back seat of the truck.

When initially found by police, Hodder sped off at a high rate of speed. He was located hours later at an address in the city’s East Flat.

Hodder’s lawyer cited a relapse with addictions issues as reason for the behaviour, and added as part of his nine probation, Hodder will be seeking out counselling

With credit for time spent in remand, Hodder has 31 days left to serve. Following his release from custody he will also be prohibited from driving for one year.

When Hodder informed Judge Harradence he would be moving to Melfort, he was reminded and warned that probation is not just a piece of paper and that any changes to the residence must be first approved by his probation officer.
