P.A. track athlete ties national record held by Andre DeGrasse

A Prince Albert athlete can now say he is as fast as Canada’s fastest man.

Storm Zablocki recently took part in the Bob Vigars Classic in London, Ont. While he didn’t win the 100-metre dash final, he did manage to tie a national record in that race,

“The previous record, that’s the Canadian junior (U20) record, and it was held by Andre Degrasse,” he said.

Other racers in the sprint were not in the u20 age category.

Degrasse set the record of 10.25 seconds more than a decade ago while with The Speed Academy, founded by former Olympian Tony Sharpe in the Pickering, Ont. area.

For Zablocki, he said it still feels surreal to know he tied the record.

“I honestly don’t think it’s quite set in for me,” he said. “There’s so many opportunities for me and I guess in a sense, the world is my oyster and that kind of has opened the doors for many future endeavours and Olympic opportunities.”

Zablocki is currently with the track club at the University of Regina but said there will be plenty of track meets and competitions coming up this summer.

“Usually what happens is out of province, we usually have to compete out of province,” he said. “Lots of travelling to Alberta, Ontario, and B.C. and possibly even the States.”
