Prince Albert’s E.A. Rawlinson Centre will be grooving to a variety of different beats this weekend.

The 18th Annual Prince Albert Festival of Dance features over 400 performers, representing eight studios from the Prince Albert, Melfort, Saskatoon and Humboldt areas. Festival committee president Kerby Toews told paNOW she is looking forward to the next three days.

“It’s just exciting to see all the kids come out, do their thing on the stage, have an opportunity to show others what they have been working on and how they are developing and progressing through their training,” she said.

The performers will be judged in a number of categories including ballet, hip-hop, tap, jazz, modern and lyrical. And as early as Friday afternoon, the parking lots outside the both theatre and the nearby Gateway Mall, were already packed with vehicles.

“We are seeing a full theatre which is nice and it’s just such a positive experience,” Toews said

Toews also acknowledged their sponsors, explaining it’s through their support, the festival committee can hand out scholarships to the performers.

“Usually we are able to give out over $15,000,” she said.

Representing Prince Albert are the Prince Albert Dance Company, Ballet ‘N All That Jazz and Bold Dance Productions (BDP). BDP Owner Kim Schick said the group is feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness.

“We work really hard through the year so it’s nice to see all that hard work finally pay off on stage,” she said.

Last weekend, Bold Dance Productions performed at the Dance City Promotions competition in Saskatoon and received the Studio Excellence Award. Schick explained they are all now looking forward to this weekend.

“It’s just such a great experience, we love being at our home theatre. The E.A. Rawlinson is just such a beautiful facility and it’s just great to support our community,” she said.

The Prince Albert Festival of Dance wraps up on Sunday.
