Toronto murder suspect to be transported back from Prince Albert

A man facing charges in connection to a murder investigation in Toronto, and a separate drug investigation in Prince Albert, will be transported back to Ontario’s capital city.

Mohamed Hassan’s matters were spoken to Wednesday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court, and the 22-year-old appeared by video from the Prince Albert Correctional Centre where he’s been since being arrested in September.

Hassan’s lawyer Christopher Koban informed the court Hassan’s murder charge will be addressed during a six-week trial in Toronto, commencing in Jan. 2024. With respect to the Prince Albert matters, not-guilty pleas have been entered on all charges, and have been adjourned to be spoken to on March 4, 2024.

On the afternoon of Sept. 22, Hassan was arrested outside a home in Prince Albert’s Carlton Park neighbourhood.

Officers found a loaded handgun, ammunition, more than 120 grams of cocaine, crack cocaine, two cell phones, and over $12,000 in cash. Hassan was subsequently charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of the proceeds of crime, possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon, and obstruction of a peace officer.

At the time of the incident, a $50,000 reward had been issued for Hassan’s arrest.

The charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder stem from a drive-by shooting incident in April 2021 in Toronto.

Hassan, who was denied bail last month with respect to the Prince Albert charges, has waived his charter right to have his trial within a reasonable amount of time.
