Salvation Army moves to new home at The Outpost

An organization that’s been in the city for 130 years has taken up shop at The Outpost.

The Salvation Army, which used to meet in its building on 12th Street East is now holding services in The Outpost downtown.

According to Major Ed Dean, who along with his wife Charlotte recently moved to P.A., the Salvation Army building was listed for sale last week.

“The Salvation Army already had it in the works that our church building was going to be sold and that we would move downtown. Our building is listed for sale. It was the middle of May that the decision was made that our church building will be sold.”

Ed and Charlotte came to Prince Albert from Maple Creek on July 1 and quickly rolled up their sleeves to serve the community they will call home. Ed admits it’s a different dynamic for them after coming from a more rural setting to a city.

Not long after they arrived, church services once again started inside The Outpost.

“We’ve been there since July 10 and we can do a whole lot more in one building, it’s a lot easier. Our first Sunday, we had 12 and last Sunday we had 17. The ones that are used to the Salvation Army being their church, they’re there, they’re supporting.”

As difficult as it is to lose a building they’ve had for years, Ed acknowledged that the services the Salvation Army offers will not change, nor will their mission of reaching out to the community.

“It’s being relevant to today’s society. We can have beautiful buildings but if there’s nobody in them, we’re irrelevant. We have people in the building every day now.”

“The Salvation Army has been in this community for 130 years. We’re not throwing out that legacy, we’re just changing with the times to be relevant again,” he added. “The Army is on the move and being the Salvation Army I believe we need to move and change to be more effective.”

Major Ed said that anyone in need of service from the local Salvation Army can continue to call the office number or visit them online. Services run at The Outpost every Sunday starting at 11:00 a.m.
