Rain or shine: Old Legends ready for all challengers

Jun 14, 2022 | 4:56 PM

The Old Legends slo-pitch team is off to a perfect start at the 55 plus games.

After beating Regina 15-13 in the morning, they went on to beat Parkland 12-6 in the afternoon. Both games were played during some monsoon type conditions, which on more than one occasion created some challenges for both infield and outfield plays. Team Captain Bruce Fiddler, 72, told paNOW the team is having fun.

“Just a bunch of old buggers that are too stupid to quit. We just want to play,” he said. “We practiced Sunday and we were like a bunch of kids out there.”

As a unit, the team lives up to its name as they can boast over 15 provincial championships.

“Basically we get a nucleus of us of six or seven that have been together from 40 and over and just keep playing,” Fiddler said.

Even more impressive is the fact that all the players on the Legends team come from Prince Albert, which has a smaller pool to draw from compared to other cities like Saskatoon or Regina.

When asked if there’s more pressure carrying that many championships, Fiddler said it’s more of an advantage, adding when the team is in a tight game they are used to the pressure.

“We responded really good in the past,” he said.

The Legends were scheduled to play again Tuesday night but due to the rain, the game has been postponed to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Prime Minister’s Park. Acknowledging that some people may scoff at the idea of competitive slo-pitch, Fiddler challenged them to come out.

“If they think it’s so easy, you go play third base when Dana Dirks is at bat and they’ve got no home runs left. He’s one of the best hitters Canada has ever had,” he said. “You don’t know how hard the ball can get hit.”

A well earned victory. (Nigel Maxwell/ paNOW Staff)

The Legends are scheduled to play three games on Wednesday: 10a.m., 12p.m. and 2p.m.
