Former P.A. resident and First Nation ambassador passes away

Jun 14, 2022 | 5:00 PM

The first woman from a First Nation to be an ambassador for Canada has passed away.

Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation member and former Prince Albert resident, Deborah Chatsis, died on June 9 after a battle with cancer.

Along with serving in Vietnam, Belize, and Guatemala, she was a senior advisor to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and worked in the Privy Council Office on different Indigenous issues.

When she spoke with paNOW in 2021, she said these positions gave her a platform to advocate for Indigenous and women’s rights in and outside Canada.

β€œI think they could see they were not alone in some of the challenges they faced.”

Former and current ambassadors took to social media shortly after her passing to pay their tributes.

Back in December 2021, Chatsis was one of 135 individuals who were appointed to the Order of Canada. She’s one of the roughly 7,000 who’ve received this honour.
