Successful weekend for Pikes at provincials

Two members of the Prince Albert Pikes artistic swim club dove head first into the competition last weekend at provincials in Regina, and returned to the surface with medals around their necks.

Olivia Harris and Olivia Schlamp competed individually. Harris, who competes in the 16+ junior category, finished third in her solo event. Meanwhile Schlamp, who competed in the 12 and under category, finished second. Coach Katherine Ingebrigtson told paNOW she was so proud of them.

“And honestly not that surprised. They worked so hard this year,” she said.

With the closure of Marion Aquatics, its been a challenging year for the club and its athletes, forced to find time to train at Frank Dunn – a facility not quite built to meet their needs. Ingebrigtson explained athletes require a 25 metre pool that is deep enough for them to be able to submerge themselves completely vertical.

“We’ve had to drive in to Saskatoon a few times a month to practice in order to be able to practice in a full sized competition pool,” she said.

Despite other setbacks this year including the cancellation of the Sask. Winter Games in February, Ingebrigtson said interest is growing, and their membership in the recreation program has grown exponentially. Noting the strength of both Olivias, Ingebrigtson hopes they can now inspire other members to consider competing.

“Olivia Harris is so strong technically. She’s put in a lot of work in that aspect and Olivia Schlamp is truly made to perform. She absolutely blew the judges away with her artistic impression,” she said.

Faced with the possibility of a new facility to train in, Ingebrigtson said the whole club is very excited about the possibilities that may arise from it.

“It would be great for Prince Albert to be able to host some sort of provincial championship like this that brings in hundreds of visitors to Prince Albert for the weekend,” she said.
