100 YEARS

A celebration 100 years in the making

Jan 25, 2022 | 8:00 AM

This year marks a very special time for over 300 residents of a village northwest of Prince Albert.

The Village of Debden is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and while the festivities are still a few months away, preparations are already in motion.

“We postponed planning for over a year because of the uncertainty, but last fall, we decided to go for it,” said Amanda Cyr with the Village. “Everyone needs something to look forward to, and we want people to get excited, come together, and build relationships.”

The anniversary committee is already working with Prince Albert Source for Sports to create unique logos for the celebrations.

One of those designs is a heritage logo that speaks to older generations, parish members, and descendants of Second World War soldiers.

“In 1939, the parish priest promised to erect a statue once all forty-six Debden soldiers returned from the war. Fighting through France, Holland, and Germany, Debden soldiers bravely fought on the front lines for six years, and against all odds, every soldier returned home,” Cyr said. “The logo represents a memorial on Main Street in Debden that serves as a reminder of a miracle, promise, and tribute to WWII soldiers.”

Two other logos will also be created, one depicting the character Smurfette, representing a former annual slo-pitch tournament.

“Smurfette is kissing a frog because many call us the Debden Frogs, a mascot which we are proud of,” Cyr added the logo will also include a pig, which symbolizes the old Greasy Pig stomping grounds.

Finally, a classic logo will be created featuring a grain elevator, paying honour to the Village’s agricultural roots.

The Centennial celebrations are due to take place July 29-31 starting with a theatre production of Debden’s history. The following day will feature a parade, children’s activities, and heritage sessions. That evening will wrap up with a cabaret featuring River’s Edge, Stephanie Rose, Layton Ferster, and Misdeal.

The final day of the festivities will include a Eucharist Celebration, pancake breakfast, and artisan market as well as learning opportunities for Indigenous history. Finally, the Centennial will feature a human foosball tournament, a school tour, fastball, fireworks, and a family dance.

Right now, Cyr said they have a lot of planning to do and due to budget constraints are hoping to spread the word through social media, family, and friends. She added it’s encouraging that many businesses have been donating to the Centennial to help with costs.

Cyr is hopeful they can showcase the true spirit of the Village to their residents and visitors.

“We often joke that if you blink, you might miss it. For those seeking adventure and relaxation, Debden is surrounded by some of the best fishing, hunting, and camping our province has to offer.”

“If you are an outdoor enthusiast or simply looking for a community-minded home to raise your family, Debden compares to none.
