Province launches new long-term care inspections program

Dec 14, 2021 | 11:10 AM

Saskatchewan’s new long-term care homes inspections program is rolling out across the province Tuesday.

The Ministry of Health will start with 20 inspections at a selection of long-term homes reflecting an urban-rural balance and varying sizes, the province said in a news release.

“We are committed to the safety and well-being of residents and staff in our long-term care homes,” Everett Hindley, the Minister of Seniors and Rural and Remote Health Minister, said in the release.

“Along with the Saskatchewan Health Authority, we have enhanced our oversight of long-term care homes over the years. This inspections program is one more step in our efforts to help ensure that our seniors live safely and comfortably in their communities.”

The first round of inspections will start Tuesday and is set to be completed by the end of March. Following that period, all long-term care homes in Saskatchewan will be inspected on a three-year cycle.

The inspections assess a care home’s compliance with regulations and the program guidelines for special care homes, an outline of standards that facilities must meet in order to “provide safe and effective care.”

Regulations and policies surrounding resident care and resident-centred work within the home are the focus of the inspections.

Saskatchewan has 151 long-term care homes and 10 other facilities with long-term care beds.
