While growing up in the Humboldt area, Joelle Hoeflicher always knew she was interested in emergency services. Now, after spending less than two years as a primary care paramedic with Parkland Ambulance, she’s been voted by her peers as the “Rookie of the Year.”

Her coworkers describe her as someone who is fun and knows what she’s doing. “She thinks of the little things that help make a shift or call run smoother” one employee wrote in a press release from Parkland Ambulance.

“Some of my best memories have been with younger children and helping to get them through situations that can be so scary and just giving them comfort and helping them go through whatever they’re going through is always a great day,” Hoeflicher said.

Parkland Ambulance has 75 employees on staff. Director of public affairs, Lyle Karasiuk said, “we are honoured that every year the staff find someone in their peer group that emulates the philosophy and caring attitude and compassion that our staff have, not only for their fellow peers but also the people they serve each and every day.”

Nick Thorimbert has been part of the staff for 20 years and was named ‘Employee of the Year.’ He is known for being a ‘consistent leader for the team’, ‘a good role model and teacher’ and for having everyone’s wellbeing in mind. Over the years, Thorimbert says the industry has progressed.

“When I started the entry level was EMT and now it’s called PCP meaning Primary Care Paramedic and they can give way more drugs than we could when we started our careers. They can start IV’s. They can do what a paramedic used to do, so it’s come a long way. The technology has too. We have CPR devices, newer monitors, the units, stretchers are powered. Everything to assist us has come a long way,” Thorimbert said.

Parkland Ambulance employees also recognized their peers behind the scenes. Jessica Masserey was named Telecommunicator of the Year for ‘always being pleasant and jolly.’ Another coworker wrote, ‘She is clear with instructions and has not put me in danger, ever.’

During her 13 year career, Masserey said she’s liked helping people in their most serious times of need.

“I think for me the calls that stand out are the ones where people are grateful. They could be yelling at you at the beginning of the call and by the end they’re very grateful you were there and you’ve calmed them down to a level so that EMS can come in and do their job,” Masserey said. “It takes compassion and caring and understanding of their situation and knowing it’s not your emergency at the time.”

Parkland Ambulance also celebrated employee Chris Pacey. He was recognized for having the most ‘Thank You’s.”
