FSIN announces election candidates; Cameron sets sights on third term as Chief

The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) is busy preparing for an election next month, and the official list of candidates was released Wednesday morning.

Current Chief Bobby Cameron is being challenged by Robert Merasty.

Cameron, from Witchekan Lake First Nation, is seeking his third term as Chief after having been first elected in 2015.

Merasty, a former Chief of Flying Dust First Nation, also served one term as Vice-Chief from 2015 to 2017. During this time he handled the FSIN’s gaming commission and the First Nations Bank portfolios among other portfolios.

For the office of first Vice-Chief, the candidates are Morley Watson and David Pratt.

Dustin Fiddler and Edward “Dutch” Lerat are running for Second Vice-Chief.

There are three candidates for Third Vice Chief: Michael Linklater, Alyson Bear and Darrin Morin.

Heather Bear, Pamela Whitehawk, Fenton Favel and Curtis Standing are the candidates vying for Fourth Vice-Chief.

The election has been scheduled for Oct. 28 in Saskatoon during the FSIN General Assembly.

The offices of the Chief, First Vice-Chief are Third Vice-Chief are all three year terms, while the offices of Second Vice-Chief and Fourth Vice-Chief are two year terms.
