Community-driven fundraiser helps local food bank

The Prince Albert Food Bank received a major donation from Walmart on Tuesday.

Walmart donated a total of $20,929.82 as a part of a national fundraising campaign.

Executive director of the local Food Bank, Kim Scruby said this donation will go a long way in helping with school feeding programs.

“This is huge for us. We get ongoing support from them throughout the year. With weekly pickups, donations of food, those types of things, Scruby said. “On a normal month, pre-COVID, we were helping about 1,100 houses a month which works out to about 3,300 people, half of which are kids.”

Due to the pandemic, Scruby added it has made it more difficult for people to access the food bank, and they are now trying to reach out more directly into the community to find people who are in need.

Store manager of the local Walmart, Chris Doucette said the funds for the donation are raised in store.

“Proceeds are raised through a fundraising campaign at our checkouts. Customers are asked for donations when they come through the till, Doucette said. “We are very grateful for the support of our community to help our Food Bank.”

Doucette also told paNOW the store has donated just over $84,000 worth of non-saleable merchandise this year to the local food bank.

Walmart Canada does a yearly national fundraising campaign through four main charities, the Food Banks of Canada, Red Cross, Breakfast Clubs of Canada, as well as Children’s Miracle Network.

Since 1994, Walmart Canada has raised over $300 million for local charities.
