‘She thought it was like Christmas’: Kinistino girl provides treats to essential workers

Chelsey Erickson says her three-year-old daughter won’t stop talking about the day she met a real, live police officer.

Earlier this week, Erickson and her daughter Leighton drove to Prince Albert and gave a mug full of treats to Cst. Meyers at the Prince Albert Police station.

“She was so excited because she got to meet a real live police officer and gave him his treats, and they gave her a coupon for a free slush, and a tattoo, and she hasn’t stopped talking about it since,” she said.

As part of her Tupperware group’s national Hug-a-Mug campaign, Erickson was tasked with selling mugs for essential workers. Each mug sold for $10.

“I set a goal of 50 mugs and within two weeks, I had sold 50 mugs,” Erickson said.

But Erickson wasn’t finished, not by a long shot. She continued to receive requests, and ended up selling 98 mugs.

Erickson and her daughter then packed the small mugs with granola bars, hand lotion, and sanitizer and distributed them to health care workers in Birch Hills and Kinistino; correctional workers in Prince Albert; staff at the Kinistino Co-Oo gas bar and grocery store, as well as other grocery store workers in Prince Albert and Saskatoon.

“She thought it was like Christmas,” Erickson joked about her daughter’s enthusiasm.

While acknowledging the gifts were small, Erickson said it felt good to give something as a way of saying thank you.

“It’s a tough time for everyone right now and they are going to work and helping make everyone safe,” she said.
