Warning to Prince Albert

Dr. Shahab says there’s a ‘caution for Prince Albert’

Saskatchewan’s Chief Medical Officer is concerned about new unrelated COVID-19 cases popping up in the Prince Albert area.

Dr. Saqib Shahab said during a press conference on Friday “there is a caution for Prince Albert” after seeing four unrelated cases in the area in the past week. The recent uptick in cases comes after weeks of no cases in the area.

“When you see cases in a certain geographic area that aren’t linked to one another, that’s always a flag,” Shahab said. “That shows that there’s on-going community transmission that is now emerging. The precautions that we should take all the time, they apply to everybody all the time.”

Shahab added those in the Prince Albert area should call the HealthLine 811 if they are experiencing symptoms and to maintain distance regardless.

“It’s definitely a message for residents of the Prince Albert areas that if you have symptoms, stay home and consider getting tested by calling 811,” he said. “Even if you don’t have symptoms and you’re planning a gathering, be considerate about who’s coming. Maintain that physical distancing in terms of how you lay things out.”

Right now, there are eight active cases in the North region where Prince Albert and area fit in. The entire North region has seen four new cases of the virus in the past seven days.

In total, the North region has 118 total cases, ranking behind Saskatoon (187) and the Far North region (335).
