Alfred Jenkins Field House, Arts Centre and Museums set for July reopenings

Jul 2, 2020 | 4:39 PM

More Prince Albert city facilities have been slated to reopen this month.

In a Thursday media release, the City announced the Prince Albert Arts Centre will open on Monday, while the Alfred Jenkins Field House will welcome the public back on July 13. Both facilities will have reduced hours and programming.

Spray parks are set to reopen Friday. Mid-July reopening dates for museums in the city have also been announced.

“We’re excited that we can start to reopen our spray parks and certain facilities at this time,” sport & recreation manager, Curtis Olsen, told paNOW. “But once again we know COVID is still happening, so we still want people to be safe and continue to follow guidelines that have been set out by the province and the Health Authority.”

On Tuesday the province announced indoor pools, indoor sports and arenas could reopen July 6. Olsen said the City is in the process of reviewing provincial guidelines, but no timeline has been set for further announcements on the Frank J. Dunn Pool, Prince Albert rinks or the Margo Fournier Centre.

“We’re going though [the guidelines] to see what’s all in there and see what requirements are needed to open those types of facilities,” he explained. Meeting with user groups is another important part of the process, he added.

Alfred Jenkins Field House reopens July 13

The Jenkins will operate from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday for the months of July and August. Olsen said things are usually quieter in the summer at the facility, so reduced hours made sense.

“As we move forward, see how things are going, then we can look to expand hours and get back to a more normal type of operation,” he said.

Olsen confirmed there will be fitness classes at the Jenkins this summer, and programs will be posted on the City of P.A. website.

Prince Albert Arts Centre reopens July 6

The Art Centre will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. The centre will offer mostly outdoor with some indoor programming for July and August.

“We’re doing outdoor kids camps,” arts and culture programmer, Kayanna Wirtz told paNOW. “There’s going to be a variety of things from painting to drawing to photography to tie-dye, that will all happen outside.”

Outdoor yoga classes are also set to start in August, explained Wirtz.

The Art Centre’s popular basement pottery studio will offer an adult Intro to Wheel class in August, with more classes planned for the fall, she said. Pottery Classes will be limited to six people to ensure physical distancing can be maintained.

For those who are vulnerable or just more comfortable at home than in the facility, the Arts Centre is also planning a “paint along” on Zoom, Wirtz said.

“We’re going to have people register online and then you can come and pick up a kit that has all the supplies,” she explained. “And then you can tune in to Zoom to actually follow along with the instructor.”

Museums reopen July 10

The Prince Albert Historical Society operates the Historical Museum, Diefenbaker House, Education and Police Museums and will reopen them all Thursday, July 10. Hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, including weekends.

Mann Art Gallery and E.A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts reopen

The City has approved the reopening plans from the Mann Art Gallery, which is located in the E.A. Rawlinson Centre. The gallery will open the week of July 16 with modified hours.

The E.A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts is planning to run a modified Summer Broadway North Program Development Camp in August.

The centre is also working on plans for other events throughout the summer and into the Fall season. Further announcements will be released at a later date.
