Bears step on the gas after an early hiccup to Sharks

Nov 16, 2019 | 5:42 PM

The Prince Albert Northern Bears got an early wake up call on Saturday.

They gave up a goal just 27 seconds into the game, but that seemed to be the little jolt they needed as they went on to beat the Battlefords Sharks 5-1 Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre.

Madison Guitard, who’s from Prince Albert, scored the opening goal for the Sharks as fans were still piling into their seats. The Bears took care of business from there, with goals from Sophia Zuck, Jessie Herner and Emma Tremblay gave the Bears a 3-1 lead after the opening period. Paris Oleksyn scored in the second period and McKenzie Mayo added another in the third.

Oleksyn finished the game with a goal an assist. Taylor Leitch had a pair of assists.

Janae Neufeld got the win for the Bears, making 22 saves on 23 shots.

The Bears picked up their seventh win in their eight games played this season, with five of those wins coming in regulation. That pushes them into second place in the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League standings with 19 points.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday against the Notre Dame Hounds, 5 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.
