Tournament organizers looking for volunteers

The puck is not set to drop for Esso Cup until April, but the organizing committee for the tournament wants people to know they need volunteers.

2020 Esso Cup Chair Robin Wildey said in order to pull off the event, volunteers are needed in a variety of roles.

“We’re looking for volunteers in all areas. We need bus drivers, people to help out with food, team hosts that will kind of [take] the team around, off ice security, ticket takers,” he said.

People interested in volunteering are encouraged to sign up online at Hockey Canada’s website. Wildey said perspective volunteers will need to complete a criminal record check. Organizers will provide those interested with a letter they can give to police so they will not be charged for the check. Tournament volunteers will have to pay $25, but in exchange will get a shirt and not have to pay admission to the event. Wildey said they need a healthy number of people to come help out.

“We’re looking for about 250 volunteers,” he said.

Organizers also announced Thursday morning tickets for the tournament are now for sale. People looking to buy can go to the tournament website where packages are available.

Wildey said the committee is currently hard at work looking for more sponsors to support the tournament. They are also planning things for visiting teams to do, which will include school visits and are hoping to give teams the chance to see the sites outside of the city.

“We are a P.A. team, but we want to encompass everything that’s around us,” he said.

Some members of the Northern Bears were also on hand for the media conference. Team captain Brooklyn Anderson said the team has started off the season well and members are excited.

“We know the opportunity we have ahead of us, we’re really working hard towards it,” she said.

This will not be Anderson’s first time at the national tournament as the Bears made the trip four years ago. She said there is pressure being the host team but doesn’t think it’s anything to worry about and that previous experience will be helpful.

“Now that we have a second chance at it, I think we really want to take it into our hands,” she said.
