Canada-Russia series a homecoming for Schneider and Fonstad

Nov 14, 2019 | 2:58 PM

Braden Schneider basically grew up in the Art Hauser Centre. He went to watch his hometown Prince Albert Raiders, and future NHL stars like Josh Morrissey and Leon Draisaitl shine on ice. He played on it too throughout his childhood, and throughout his Midget AAA year with the Prince Albert Mintos.

But now, Schneider will play by far his biggest game on the Art Hauser Centre ice. He’ll play on the ice on Thursday night in the final game of the 2019 CIBC Canada-Russia Series. Schneider and Team WHL have a one-point lead on Team Russia heading into the series’ final game.

“I remember it was like playing in the NHL when you played in the Art Hauser Centre when you were young. I remember watching guys like Morrissey and Draisaitl rip around there. A lot of good memories in that rink,” said Schneider, the Brandon Wheat Kings defenceman.

It won’t be the biggest game that Cole Fonstad has played in the Hauser though. He was part of last year’s Raiders championship winning team that won it all in Game 7 overtime on May 13. But this game will be up there, for sure.

“I’ve experienced a lot in there,” Fonstad said. “Through the playoffs last year, and I played three years there. The fans are unreal there, they’re really passionate. I think it’s going to be a good crowd tonight.”

Through the first five games of the series, the Canadian clubs have a one-point advantage of Team Russia.
