Dave Rezansoff, with Saskatchewan Environment, told paNOW if people find a vehicle in a body of water their priority should be their own safety.

“First and foremost the thing that needs to be done is whoever sees the vehicle needs to ensure their personal safety at all times,” Rezansoff said. “Then they can call in to their local police or the RCMP.”

If there is evidence of fuel or oil leaking, they should also call the ministry’s spill emergency line at 1-844-764-3637.

Rezansoff said although smaller vehicles like cars do not usually contain enough fluids to cause concern from an environmental perspective, depending on their location, their potential for movement by strong currents can make them dangerous.
