Morning temperature dips to near record-low territory

Prince Albert residents scraping the ice off their windshields earlier today, may have noticed a bite to the air.

This morning, according to Environment Canada, we were incredibly close to setting a new daily-low record in temperature.

“(Thursday) the temperature got down to -10.5 C at our climate station,” Meteorologist, Terri Lang told paNOW. “The record for the day is -10.8 C set last year. So, really close to breaking that temperature record again.”

The back-to-back chilly October days can be attributed to shorter days.

“What happens is we have one those big arctic high-pressure systems that move down and they start to go deeper because the arctic has lost the sun now. The days get shorter and the nights are get longer, and that allows the cold air to deepen and when that air moves across the Prairies, that’s when get those really cool temperatures,” she explained.

Temperature records have been kept for P.A since 1884.

Lang noted that a rise in the mercury is not in the cards.

Daily lows and highs will stay below normal for the next several days, but as for one positive, the area is expected to stay dry.

“It seems like all the moisture is getting dumped over Manitoba. They’re getting quite a massive snow storm right now. I can’t see any discernible moisture heading [Prince Albert’s] way quite yet, but we’ll keep an eye on things because this is the time of year when things can change quite quickly,” she said.
