Mintos’ Springer silences the Stars in a season opening shootout

Sep 21, 2019 | 4:12 PM

After a see-saw, back-and-forth battle that could only be decided by an old west shootout, Prince Albert Mintos forward Dawson Springer fired the last bullet.

Dawson Springer, who scored 28 times in the regular season, got the only shootout goal in three rounds. He waited patiently as he made a forehand move, and slid it underneath the glove hand of a sprawling Jackson Fellner, the Stars goaltender. Springer’s goal came right after after Mintos goaltender Spencer Welke made a spread-eagle save to completely rob Carson Dobson.

The Mintos were convinced they ended the game midway through the overtime period when Chase Bertholet’s shot on an empty net sat on the goal line but was ruled it didn’t go in. About a minute later, Springer had a glorious chance on a rebound himself, but fell as he couldn’t get one past a diving Fellner.

Josh Peppler had his first two goals as a Minto in regulation, both coming in the first period. Chase Bertholet had a goal and an assist. Ashton Ferster also found the back of the net.
