Making another ‘Ferster’ impression

Aug 17, 2019 | 3:15 PM

Prince Albert’s Ashton Ferster made good first impressions last year in his 15-year-old season.

Despite being a rookie with the Prince Albert Mintos last year, Ferster established himself as one of the teams’ consistent point producers with 13 goals and 31 points in 42 games. He represented his province at the Canada Winter Games, scoring two goals and four points in six tournament games.

Ferster signed with the Medicine Hat Tigers on Aug. 31 last year, less than a week after their main camp last season as a fourth round draft pick of the Tabbies.

But this year, Ferster will have new coaches to impress all over again on both teams.

Danton Danielson takes over Ken Morrison’s position as the Mintos bench boss this year, and he evaluates the Mintos’ talent at his first camp Saturday and Sunday at the Art Hauser Centre. In Medicine Hat, Willie Desjardins returns to tame his Tigers as the head coach and general manager, replacing Shaun Clouston. The Tigers’ camp starts next Sunday.

“Show my style of play. I’m a power forward, I forecheck hard, 200-foot player, get pucks out and hit bodies,” Ferster said.

Ferster’s big-boy game will be on display this weekend as the Mintos prepare for the upcoming season with their camp this weekend.

Even on the camp’s first day, Ferster was already excited with the group of players coming in.

“It’s exciting. We’re looking pretty good, seeing all the new guys coming up with all their talent. It’s going to be fun.”

Ferster is coming off an injury in the offseason. He fractured the growth plate in his knee during the Mintos’ spring camp back in April, and needed to wait two months before he could get back into the training room.

“I was in Calgary for crash conditioning all summer, trying to condition my knee and get better, and quicker and stronger,” Ferster said. “I’m feeling pretty good, it’s coming along. I just have to get back into game shape.”

On Sunday, the Mintos will close out their camp with two sessions at 11 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.
