R.M. of Prince Albert introduces option for mail in ballots

Jul 12, 2019 | 2:05 PM

Residents in the Rural Municipality (R.M.) of Prince Albert will have one more option next year when it comes time to vote in the R.M.’s election.

At council’s monthly meeting last Thursday, a new bylaw was introduced which will allow for residents to cast their ballots by mail. Reeve Eric Schmalz said during his campaigning in the recent byelection, he heard a lot of interest in having the option for mail in ballots.

“You’ve got rate payers who may not necessarily be living here, they may be living in Alberta,” he said.

The bylaw proposal was read twice at the council’s meeting, and is expected to be passed at the council’s next meeting Aug. 8. To be eligible for a mail in ballot, residents would have to register in advance, and all ballots would have to be received at the R.M. office by a specific day or would otherwise be considered spoiled. That date will be set by Administrator Roxanne Roy, who mentioned at the meeting she had never before heard interest in this.

“There was actually quite a few questions about it in this byelection, and that’s why we decided to go ahead and pass the bylaw,” she said.

The election for Reeve, as well as councilors in Div. 1, 3 and 5 has been scheduled for Oct. 21, 2020.
