Prince Albert seeing fewer break and enters: Police

Jun 28, 2019 | 2:13 PM

The latest statistics from Prince Albert Police, are showing a drop in the number of break and enters to homes, businesses and vehicles in the city.

During the month of May, the most recent month for which stats are available, police responded to 47 break-and enters. This was down 14.9 per cent from the same period last year. Last month’s figures are part of an ongoing positive trend. Total crimes against property were down across the city last year. There were nearly 700 fewer complaints compared to the year prior.

“Our members are proactively targeting property crime in Prince Albert and are seeing success not only in arresting those responsible for break and enters, but in getting personal property back to residents in a timely manner,” Police Chief Jon Bergen said in a statement. “Residents play an important role in helping to drive down the number of break and enters and it’s important for residents to continue reporting property crime in their area along with any suspicious activity they might see around the community.”

Dave Mulhall, president of the Midtown Neighbourhood Watch group, said resident apathy may have played a role in the drop in numbers.

“Unfortunately I think less [break and enters] are getting reported less by residents because it’s becoming so common. However I cannot say enough good things about the Prince Albert Police Service and the good job they do,” he said.

Police are encouraging residents to log their personal property information, including serial numbers, receipts and photos, which can aid police in investigating property crime.

Such was the case earlier this week when police located a bike stolen in a recent break and enter during an unrelated police call. Police were able to quickly match the bike, valued at $5,000, using photos and records supplied by the rightful owner.
