New spray park taking shape at Kinsmen Park

The opening of the city’s new spray park at Kinsmen Park appears imminent although it’s not clear if it’ll be ready for the Canada Day weekend.

The pad for the facility was laid in recent weeks and the landscaping is taking shape on the previous Ella Muzzy paddling pool site.

The city’s parks and recreation department told city council last week the spray devices are expected by month’s end but a precise date for opening has not been confirmed.

The facility is being paid for with part of the $1 million in apology money given to Prince Albert over a three-year period by Husky Energy following the oil spill into the North Saskatchewan River in 2016. When the new amenity was announced in November mayor Greg Dionne said it would be a state-of-the-art splash park and ” this certainly will be the jewel and the place to go for summer entertainment.”

At least one city councillor is wondering what sort of protection the new spray park will have against vandalism. Ward 6 Coun. Blake Edwards asked city staff if there would be permanent fencing. Staff said issues such as vandalism were always assessed and costs around fencing could be explored if council wanted that to be done.

The $300,000 spray park at the north end of Kinsmen will boost the offerings at what is arguably the finest multi-use park in the city, which already includes the Kinsmen Water Park, arena, various outdoor playing fields and recreational and picnic amenities. A major upgrade to Kinsmen Park was completed in 2017 with over $1,435,000 invested including support from a Canada 150 grant.
