Great game by Gardiner gases Wheat Kings

Nov 15, 2015 | 7:31 PM

Red Gardiner’s shorthanded goal at 12:51 of the third period stood up as the winner as the Prince Albert Raiders rebounded from Friday’s 4-3 overtime loss against Saskatoon with a 3-2 win over the Wheat Kings in Brandon.

The 19-year old winger chipped a backhander past Brandon goalie Jordan Papirny after Raider defenseman Jesse Lees’ relentless forechecking resulted in the puck bouncing in front of the Wheat King net right to Gardiner. Gardiner’s first period snipe on a Prince Albert power play gave the Raiders an early 2-0 lead and ended the team’s 0-for-21 funk with the man advantage.

Meanwhile Lees assisted on Luke Coleman’s sensational game opening goal just 2:10 into the first period.  Coleman outraced the Brandon defense down the left wing, cut through the crease and scored on a forehand to backhand move and now has six goals on the season.

The Wheat Kings battled back to tie the game on goals by Luke Harrison late in the first period and Kale Clague about 7-minutes into the second period.

Raider goalie Ian Scott turned in a solid 33 save performance including highway robbery on Brandon forward Duncan Campbell from in close on a back door play in the third period while the game was still tied. The win raised the 16-year-old rookie’s record to 6-1, sliced his goals against average to 2.50 and increased his save percentage to .921, which ranks Scott 8th in the WHL in both categories.

Associate coach Dave Manson told the MIX 101FM post game show audience with the exception of a second period lapse the team mantianined its structure and executed the game plan with a willingness to do the small things that wins hockey games like blocking shots. Ironically Gardiner’s power play goal came during a too many men on the ice call against Brandon moments after the Raiders killed off their own too many men penalty.

Manson said the power play had been better than the 0-for-21 stretch indicated and credited hard for work a perfect game on the penalty kill.  He called Lees a seasoned veteran who can be relied on in any situation comparing him to former Raider overage defenseman Mark Ardelin who always came to the rink with a positive attitude and ready to work.

The victory gives the Raiders a three point lead on the second place Wheat Kings in the WHL’s eastern divison and leaves them one point back of first place Red Deer in the conference. The Raiders also have a game in hand on the Rebels.

The Raiders host Moose Jaw Tuesday looking to avenge last Saturday’s 6-4 loss on the road.  Warrior captain and the league’s leading scoring Brayden Point had four goals and an assist in that game. Earlier this season the Raiders whipped the Warriors 7-2 in Prince Albert.
