Prince Albert was well represented during this year’s Ukrainian Canadian Congress Nations Builders and Community Recognition Awards, held in Saskatoon on Nov. 8.

This year’s awards ceremony marked the 21st annual for the event that recognizes and pays tribute to Ukrainian Canadians chosen by the Awards Committee for their commendable service.

Two Prince Albert residents were recognized at the event. Elmer Malec from Prince Albert was awarded the community recognition award for leadership and volunteerism.

Malec, who has been a member of the Prince Albert and District Ukrainian Cultural and Heritage Club for over 20 years, said he was very flattered to receive the award.

“I didn’t feel I had done any more than anyone has done but I was flattered, very flattered, to receive that,” said Malec.

“It’s something that not very many people from here have had so I guess that is the posy in my bonnet. I am sure there were other people that were equally deserving as I was…but I am glad to receive it.”

Jan Olesko, president of the Prince Albert and District Ukrainian Cultural and Heritage Club, said Malec was a very deserving recipient for the award. She said she is very proud of all of this year’s recipients.

“Of course I am significantly proud and also proud that our heritage is being recognized by such exemplary people,” she said.

Brighton Stefanyshyn was another Prince Albert resident awarded for her achievements. She received the community recognition youth achievement award.

David Dutchak of Blaine Lake was also recognized for his help in leading the Ambulances for Ukraine humanitarian project. That project saw the delivery of four ambulances to the Ukraine including one from Prince Albert Parkland Ambulance.
