City still aiming to land a major airline service

The possibility of a major airline service coming to Prince Albert is still in the air.

City manager Jim Toye has recently sparked new hope into the likelihood of a major airline coming to the city.

Inspired by recent discussions with officials from Brandon, Man., Toye said the city could potentially template a proposal based on Brandon’s airport.

“We are welcome to go there and have a look and to explain the situation,” he said. “When we have a door open like that, it helps.”

Toye said he would like to see either one of the major airlines, Westjet or Air Canada, make their way to Prince Albert.

Infrastructure upgrades to the airport would have to be done before a formal proposal is made.

Those upgrades, which includes a new terminal building and improvements to security, are currently included in the city’s five-year plan.

“Those are some of the things we’re going to need in order to get their business here and I think we can be proactive with having that type of infrastructure here,” he said.

The 1,524 metre runway at the Prince Albert Airport would suffice for smaller planes, he added, however, the type of service would also depend on the type of demand.

“We’re not going to just count on Prince Albert,” he said. “If we have people who want to fly to any destination … I think we deserve that service here and for our residents not only from P.A but the area would take advantage of that.”

Both WestJet and Air Canada have responded to paNOW via email indicating neither company have plans to service Prince Albert in the near future.

According to Toye, the city has not formally contacted either of the major airlines.

“Are we days away from some type of announcement? Absolutely not, but we are still trying to work towards something,” Toye said.
