Teams ready for Relay for Life

Jun 5, 2015 | 6:35 AM

Rain or shine, the annual Relay for Life event gets underway Friday night in Prince Albert.

Close to 50 teams are registered to take part this year.

The Simply Wed Squad consists of drama and band students from St. Mary High School.

“I have a few family members that had cancer, one passed away recently within the last year, and some others have been battling it for three years,” said team captain Nathalie Parent, a Grade 11 student at the school.

The team is walking in honour of a special 10-year-old boy named Patrick. Patrick was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.  Last year, St. Mary partnered with Odyssey Productions to grant the boy his wish to play a life-sized version of a video game.

Patrick has since passed away.

“That really hit me that this disease really strikes anybody,” said Parent.

All Night for the Fight consists of members of the development education program at Ecole Vickers School. The team consists of eight members.

“All of us have been affected in one way or another by someone that we know and love with cancer. We thought this might be a great way to support a great cause,” said Linda Mackie.

The team is also walking in honour of an eight-year-old student at the school who was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Mackie said the team has been very busy with fundraising, including a comedy night with Kelly Taylor, cupcake sales at the school and a Prince Albert Raiders package giveaway.

Opening ceremonies start at 6 p.m. at the Harry Jerome Track.  The event runs until 6 a.m. Saturday morning.

“Because there’s so many people it’s great to just connect with other people and so having all those people there keeps you going,” said Mackie.

Parent said she is equally excited about the event and is not concerned about staying awake.

“This event is fun, it is exciting and it focuses on the positive side of treatment and doing something to make a difference instead of the negative side people think of when they think of cancer,” she said.

The luminary ceremony is scheduled to start around 10:30 p.m. Entertainment starts at 5 p.m. and will continue on the main stage all night.
