Student recovering after Shellbrook attack

Jun 4, 2015 | 6:24 PM

A Shellbrook student is back in school, and a fellow student accused of stabbing her is still in custody.

On May 15, W.P. Sandin Public School and the town’s elementary school went into hold and secure mode after an incident while a student was leaving a classroom after finishing an exam.

This wasn’t a case where class had just let out, said Robert Bratvold, director of education with Saskatchewan Rivers School Division.

“I don’t think there were a lot of students who witnessed the actual attack, but there were a number of students who witnesses the very soon, sort of, immediate aftermath. And so those students certainly had some traumatic experiences,” he said.

Bratvold said teachers started to administer first aid to the victim, who has not been named because she’s under 18, immediately. The girl was taken to hospital after that.

Communication between the elementary school and W.P. Sandin was swift, he said.

It “was really a tough situation for the little kids. It happened over the noon hour and so there’s lots of uncertainty and lots of challenges there with the younger students and not really know what’s happening.”

Michael Rudolph, who was also a student, was arrested after noon hour that day in a house in Shellbrook.

“It doesn’t always go so smoothly,” Bratvoldt said, recognizing the RCMP’s efforts.

The following day – a Saturday – a community crisis response team was on site at W.P. Sandin to provide counseling and support to staff.

The following week when school resumed, students also had visitors.

“We had a response team from our school division with counselors, and social workers, and psychologists, a full team actually out at W.P. Sandin Tuesday (of that week) with support for kids and staff and some staff and students at the elementary school as well as it was needed,” Bratvold said.

Bratvold confirmed through the victim’s family that she is recovering and has returned to school.

Rudolph, 19, was scheduled for a bail hearing last week, but they didn’t follow through with it.

He remains in custody and his next court appearance on July 3 is also set for a bail hearing.
