RCMP uses spike belt to end suspect’s flight

RCMP set up a spike belt on Highway 55 to stop a vehicle fleeing officers at 200 kilometres an hour near Meadow Lake.

Officers had attempted to stop a Ford Explorer allegedly driven by Aaron Gardiner, 38, on Monday afternoon on Highway 155 north of Green Lake. He was wanted on various warrants.

The vehicle fled police, and RCMP did not pursue the vehicle.

RCMP from detachments in Pinehouse, Loon Lake, Meadow Lake, Île-à-la-Crosse, Green Lake and Buffalo Narrows, were contacted and searched highways for the Ford Explorer.

According to the RCMP, witnesses spotted the vehicle on Highway 55 in Meadow Lake, still travelling at a dangerous rate of speed.

The RCMP then set up a spike belt on the highway and to stop the vehicle.

Gardiner allegedly attempted to continue to flee on foot but was quickly arrested with the help of an RCMP police dog.

He now faces charges of flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified, failure to comply with a judges undertaking, resisting arrest and uttering threats.

Gardiner made an appearance in Green Lake Provincial Court on Tuesday morning, his next appearance will be June 8.
