Fire burns north of Little Red River Park

Jun 4, 2015 | 1:04 PM

Fire crews continue to battle a fire north of Little Red River Park, which is about four hectares in size.

According to the Saskatchewan ministry of environment’s Val Nicholson, the fire was reported after 11 a.m. and is located between Marks Nine Golf and Country Club and Pine Grove Correctional Centre.

Initially, firefighters used air tankers to dump water on the blaze. Ministry of environment ground crews and Buckland Fire and Rescue crews were also responding.

By 5 p.m. ground crews were still working on the fire.

“And they’ll likely continue to be working on into the evening.  They’re making good progress.  The fire is not contained at this point, but there’s a hose line all the way around the fire, so we have firefighters working with hoses all the way around the fire at this time,” Nicholson said.

“They hit it (the fire) very quickly with some good success.”

To date, there are 11 wild fires burning in the province. Three are listed as ‘not contained.’

On Wednesday, the province rescinded its ban on open fires in the province. The fire ban at Little Red River Park was also lifted.

There’s no information yet about the cause of the fire.
