Gardiner gets in on Tourism Week

Prince Albert Raider winger Reid Gardiner is better known for his sizzling snap shot and he put another skill to the test on Tuesday afternoon.

The 19-year-old signed autographs and interacted with fans outside the City’s tourism office on Day 2 of Tourism Week in Prince Albert.

The three-year Raider veteran said it was nice to get reconnected with some fans.

“P.A. is a small community and to see the same faces over and over, it’s pretty cool,” said Gardiner.  The Humboldt native got the feeling they are as excited as he is about the start of a new season this fall. “I think they miss hockey too. They have been saying a little bit of that, so it’s good.”

Gardiner is also among the players and fans anxious to see who will take over from outgoing general manager Bruno Campese.  However, last season’s leading scorer said Campese will be difficult to replace.

“He is the one who drafted me, he’s been there for my three years and he has been a real leader in the community and I think P.A. will really miss him.”

While there will be a change at the top, Gardiner is pleased the entire coaching staff is returning, led by head coach Marc Habscheid.

“It’s going to be huge for the organization and I think the community as well. The community saw how good a guy Marc can be and I think he was just what we needed at the time (Habscheid was hired after the Nov. 1 firing of Cory Clouston), for him signing on for that many (four) years shows that he’s bought in and the players alike are buying in as well.”

Although Gardiner led the team in scoring last season (34 goals and 64 points), increasing his totals by 12 goals and 20 points from 2013-14, he is a long shot to be selected at the NHL draft. The candidate for the Raiders captaincy next season has decided to train hard and concentrate on what he can control.

“The draft is the draft, if it happens (being selected) it happens, but if it doesn’t I’m not going to let it alter my path of where I want to be (the NHL).  I don’t think it would be a huge thing if it happens or not.  If it does it would be a great opportunity, but if not I’ll just keep working hard.”

Gardiner didn’t get selected last June in his first year of eligibility but did get a rookie tryout with the Minnesota Wild.
