VIDEO: Rivier Academy Choir members ‘running’ to Ottawa

May 8, 2015 | 7:29 AM

Members of the Rivier Academy Choir in Prince Albert are gearing up for a trip to Ottawa by holding a special fundraiser.

The choir has been selected to attend the UNISONG Choral Festival in Ottawa, which will be held from June 22 to July 2.

Lauren Lohneis is the choir teacher at Rivier Academy and will be the director for the UNISONG choir.

“It’s really cool, we get to sing on Parliament Hill on Canada Day,” Lohneis said.

This is the first time Rivier has gone to UNISONG, which is a festival that is invitation only.

Rivier Academy is the only choir from Saskatchewan attending the festival.

The whole trip will cost the choir about $33,000 to attend and Lohneis said they are hitting that “light ahead at the end of the tunnel” phase when it comes to where they are in terms of fundraising.

Now, the choir will be hosting a Music for the Sole run on May 23 at 9 a.m.

The event will feature a five or 10 kilometre run/walk.

Lohneis said this is the first time Music for the Sole will be held in Prince Albert and is run through the Saskatchewan Choral Federation and volunteers.

“We’ve been tasked this year, all year, with fundraising an immense amount of money to get everyone there …. We thought with all the fundraising we have to do this year that we’d think of different ways to raise money instead of selling things, that’s when Music for the Sole came up,” Lohneis said.

“The students that are involved in our UNISONG Choir [will] go and ask for pledges and donations for their participation and then the Choral Federation gives 80 per cent of everything we raise through the run back to the choir.”

“We’re also looking for people to contact me about doing an acoustic set of music at the reception which will be immediately after the run, as people are cross the finish line kind of thing.”

Lohneis said anyone wishing to provide music can contact her at Rivier Academy at 306-764-6289.

Rivier Academy will be the start and finish line for both the five and 10 kilometre races, which will use the Rotary Trail.

“If you’re doing the five kilometre you’ll do a two-and-a-half K and then a turn around, and the same for the 10 kilometeres.”

Some of the choir members will be participating in the race.

The proceeds from the event go directly towards the students’ trip to Ottawa, which includes choral music fees and their registration and conductor fees for the event.

Lohneis said they can use all the participants and volunteers are they can.

“It’s going to be a really great event. Because it is so new to P.A. … we could use as many hands, or feet for that matter, as we can get. And because it’s at the end of May, anyone running the Summit Run can get this in as a practice run.”
