Student-focused juried art show kicks off at Mann Art Gallery

Apr 6, 2015 | 11:35 AM

Students across Prince Albert will have an opportunity to have their artwork exhibited.

A new juried art show at the Mann Art Gallery is all about the up-and-coming young artists who are looking for some guidance and recognition for their work.

Mann Art Gallery curator Jesse Campbell said it’s being led by gallery educator Lana Wilson.

“It’s a great opportunity for students to have that professional experience of having their work up on a gallery wall with the proper lighting and framing and such.”

And unlike the artists, there’s nothing junior about this show.

“It gives them great exposure because the show is up for about a month and a half,” said Campbell. “There’s people from all over the city and the province who come in to check it out.”

The work was collected earlier in the year by Wilson, who had been in contact with high school art teachers around the city.

At the end of April, there will be a special event for all the student artists to attend. Campbell said that there will be a reception for the students and their families and friends on April 23, and they will also be handing out awards sponsored by some local organizations.

Campbell added that the award is usually a cash prize.

The event, which coming into its fourth year has been fairly popular, according to Campbell. Approximately 80 pieces of art were submitted by students last year.

“It’s great to see what young people are working on, what they are taking inspiration from,” said Campbell. “We have some works that are submitted that are directly inspired from our last exhibition, Winter Festival.”

You can start checking out the student works this Tuesday at the Mann Art Gallery.
