Inquest into murder of Lee Bonneau begins Monday
An inquest starting on Monday should reveal more about the killing of six-year-old Lee Bonneau.
Thirty-two witnesses are on the list in the hunt for answers, which is expected to last two weeks. Five groups have been given standing at the inquest — the ministry of social services, the Yorkton Tribal Council, the RCMP, Lee’s father Dave Bonneau and the parents of an unnamed youth.
Lee Bonneau was beaten to death with a 2×4 in August 2013 on the Kahkewistahaw First Nation, near Broadview. It came out later that Lee’s killer was a 10-year-old boy.
Because of their ages, and the fact that both boys were either in the care of or receiving programming from social services, not many details could be released. More has come out since then, mostly in the form of reports.
But the inquest will put everything on the table. It will establish the details of Lee’s death, and could make recommendations on how to stop anything like it from happening again.
