Annual Way of the Cross an opportunity to reflect

Although the air was crisp, a gathering of more than 40 people took part in a pilgrimage in Prince Albert on Friday afternoon.

The Outdoor Way of the Cross procession is held annually by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Prince Albert. It is one of many held around the world to mark Good Friday. The participants started their journey at City Hall after noon and sang hymns between each of the stations they walked to.

Bishop Albert Thévenot explained that the locations chosen are places where we could do deeper reflection and better serve each other.

The group had stopped at the downtown Saskatchewan Liquor Board store early in their walk, where they read from the scripture. Thévenot said there are people who have addictions to alcohol and drugs, and it affects their lives and the lives of their families.

They also stopped at the Prince Albert Share-A-Meal Food Bank.

“So many people are starving in a city that is so rich on one hand, and why is this so? What is causing this hunger for food and not having enough food for some families? This is something we should be very much concerned about.”

Thévenot was happy that the day’s walk drew a good crowd, which included families with small children.

“I think that it’s good to see that people are also concerned about the lives of other people and that be motivated by our faith in Christ.”

Between each station, the cross was carried by a different person. Thévenot explained that this is because we all have our crosses.

“We all have our challenges, we all have our sufferings, we all have our miseries, we all have our ups and downs in life and I think we carry the cross and hope that it will give us courage that the challenges come we will not let it overtake us, but we will overtake them by our faith in Christ and his help.”
