Carnival meets ice in P.A.

With their hearts pumping and the crowd cheering, skaters aged three to 17 took to the rink in the 2015 Under The Big Top Ice Show.

On Sunday, the Prince Albert Skating Club was proud to showcase the skills its club members mastered during the year.

Junior Bronze skater, Jenny Lewis, 10, was especially excited for this year’s carnival ice show being she was chosen for a solo.

“The [coaches]…picked one from each group and they picked me because they said I work the hardest,” she said.

Beginning skating at the age of two, Lewis said she has gotten past the nerves of being alone on the ice.

“It’s just really fun to do and [gives] you exercise,” she said.

For Bailey Oleksyn, 17, skating was something she had to do as a child, but ended up sticking with for 12 years.

“It’s a tradition in my family, so when we were younger we [had] to learn how to skate…like I was on skates by the age one, age two,” she said, smiling as she explained how skating makes her feel, “it’s almost like the closest thing to flying … and no matter what happens during your day when you step on the ice all your problems just go away.”

This was the last show the Senior Bronze skater will take part in as she heads to university, where she said she will continue to skate.

After 10 years, Oleksyn said she is going to miss being part of the Prince Albert Skating Club Ice Show.

“It’s just a good moment to show off what you can do,” she said.
