3rd Northern Drama Festival to be held in Ile-a-la-Crosse

On April 15 & 16, 2011, five northern drama groups will be part of the third Northern Drama Festival, one of the Regional Drama Festivals registered with the Saskatchewan Drama Association.

The Northern Drama Festival is part of a Northern Drama Project, a drama development program coordinated by the Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation District (NSCRD), the Saskatchewan Drama Association, and the schools and communities involved in the project including: Charlebois School in Cumberland House, Rossignol High School in Ile-a-la-Crosse, Twin Lakes School in Buffalo Narrows, Minahik Waskahigan School in Pinehouse, and Chief Moses Ratt School in Sucker River.

The Festival will begin with technical rehearsals on Friday afternoon. Each of the participating school drama groups will perform their plays on Friday evening, April 15th, starting at 6:30 p.m. at Rossignol High School in Ile a la Crosse.

On Saturday, the groups will participate in production workshops, drama games, and an awards luncheon. One of the plays will be chosen to participate in the Saskatchewan Drama Festival May 12-14 in Regina.

“This has proven to be an opportunity that the youth in the north are interested in and it encourages more cultural programming in our northern communities.”, said Judy MacLeod Campbell, Program Manager for Culture & Community Development with the NSCRD.

“We are happy to be partnering for the third Northern Drama Project and Festival. Northern community involvement in our Festivals is important to our organization.

We see the benefits of northern communities active in drama.”, says Lenore Bailey, Project Manager with the Saskatchewan Drama Association. Patrick French was the mentor hired by the Saskatchewan Drama Association to work with the five northern drama groups throughout the project providing two, one day workshops in each community, ongoing developmental support, and will be adjudicating the Festival.

“We are happy to host the Northern Drama Festival again this year and welcome everyone to attend the performances on April 15 at 6:30 p.m. – come out and support these talented youth”, says Alice Ratt.

Alice, along with Rossignol High School Principal Vince Ahenakew and Director of Education of the Ile-a-la-Crosse School Division Lon Borgorsen, have been very supportive of drama in the north and excellent hosts.

Funding support for the Project and the Festival includes a Community Grant from the Community Initiatives Fund, Saskatchewan Lotteries, SaskCulture and the Saskatchewan Arts Board, as well as participating schools and communities.
