Construction season

Prince Albert roadwork season ramps up with paving, utility upgrades

Prince Albert residents are being asked to expect delays and drive cautiously as the city moves ahead with another busy construction season.

Jeff Da Silva, director of public works for the City of Prince Albert, said repairs are already underway on several major routes, including 6th Avenue East and the area around 12th Street West and 12th Avenue.

“Construction season is well underway,” Da Silva said. “Residents will note that we have a portion of 6th Avenue East flipped over for two-way traffic while we do some milling and paving in that location.”

He said the city is also doing underground utility repairs and paving work on 12th Street West and 12th Avenue as part of a broader construction program.

Road rehabilitation is also planned on 6th Avenue East from 23rd Street to 28th Street. Residents can find project details and notices on the City’s capital projects page

Da Silva said the city’s road rehabilitation program typically covers between four and seven kilometres of paving annually. Over the past five years, the city has completed 38.6 kilometres of roadway rehabilitation.

The 2026 budget includes $4.4 million for road rehabilitation, $1.5 million for water main replacement, $850,000 for sanitary and storm sewer replacement, and $350,000 for sanitary and storm relining. Another $120,000 is budgeted for pathway reconstruction in parks and at Cooke Municipal Golf Course, for a total roads, utilities and parks construction budget of $7.22 million.

Da Silva also addressed a recent line-painting error on Central Avenue after residents noticed a solid yellow line where a dashed white line should have been.

“We did note early this morning an error on that stretch from approximately 15th Street to 10th Street on Central Avenue,” he said. “It was mistakenly painted solid yellow rather than what should have been a white dashed line.”

He said the city is working with its contractor to correct the mistake.

Drivers who use 13th Street between 6th Avenue and 1st Ave East will need to slow down to 40 km/hr soon. Council voted in favour of the change weeks ago, and the signs are currently being prepared.

He also said the city is preparing an update for council on the 6th Avenue viaduct rehabilitation project. Da Silva said assessment and design work has been completed, but the project is not yet under construction because more information is needed before timelines can be confirmed.

“We do want to ask residents to plan their trips around the city, understanding that construction season is underway, and to drive with caution around all construction zones for the safety of our staff, contractors and other residents,” Da Silva said.
