Six free agents still unsigned by Saskatchewan Roughriders

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are concentrating on their own free agents –Sean Lucas, Daniel Francis, Kye Stewart, Wayne Smith, Kitwana Jones– before setting their priorities heading into Tuesday night’s deadline of 11 p.m.

The Roughriders still have six players unsigned who will hit the open market on Tuesday night.

General Manager Brendan Taman feels the first priority is trying to lock up linebackers Sean Lucas, Daniel Francis, Kye Stewart, offensive lineman Wayne Smith and defensive lineman Kitwana Jones before trying to find players from other teams to fill holes.

“We made a pretty big splash (Friday) obviously,” said in the shadow of newly signed offensive tackle Alexandre Gauthier, “I don’t expect us to be that heavily involved (in free agency) but if I guy we lose because of whatever reason, we’ll turn our thoughts elsewhere.”

Perception is that the Riders should have some money to spend with the departure of Andy Fantuz to the National Football League plus the retirement of all-star centre Jeremy O’Day but with the signing of Gauthier and raises due to other players on the roster, Taman says he’s not working with a whole of cap space.

“There’s not a lot (of cap space). There’s some but it depends on every transaction you do,” explained Taman, “With Jeremy and Andy leaving, obviously it helped, but we spent right to (the cap) last year, if not more so, so we’re pretty tight … but it’s an hourly changing thing at times.”

With the signing of left tackle Alexandre Gauthier it is expected the Riders will not attempt to re-sign Joel Bell.
